Japanese Head Spa in Nanaimo: A Luxury Scalp Treatment at Beyond Beauty Bar

I have been hearing a lot about Japanese Head Spas recently. These treatments promise more than just relaxation. They blend traditional Japanese techniques with modern scalp therapy to improve circulation, reduce stress, and promote healthier hair from the root. Tucked into the heart of Nanaimo is Beyond Beauty Bar. After doing some research, I saw that Beyond Beauty Bar offered a Japanese Head Spa service, so I decided to give it a try.
I was expecting the service to happen in Beyond Beauty Bar’s main space in the back where they used to do hair treatments. However, after check-in, we were escorted a few doors down to their new hair salon. We started the service by choosing a tea we would be having after our treatment and the scent of the products we wanted used.
In the front of the salon is a space for the typical cut and colour services. To my surprise, we were taken to the back where a space had been fully transformed into a head spa. We changed into robes and slippers and then were taken to our spa stations. Each spa station is separated by a curtain, allowing for privacy. We got tucked in under a blanket with our hair hanging into a sink.
The treatment begins with warm water and professional-grade products, gently cleansing and exfoliating the scalp while promoting circulation and relaxation. Slow, intentional massage techniques release tension through the scalp, neck, and shoulders, creating a deeply calming experience.
What makes Japanese head spas a well-rounded experience is that they are not only about scalp/hair health but also general skin health. During the treatment, you also get a mini facial, which includes facial massage techniques to promote lymphatic drainage.
While your hair is being steamed or a treatment mask is on your hair, you get a shoulder and arm massage. By the end of the session, you feel fully relaxed. Your hair feels softer and healthier, while the face and scalp feel refreshed and balanced.
After our hair treatments, we were brought to the front where our tea was waiting, and we had a quick blow-out.
My advice if you are getting this treatment:
Do not wear makeup since you are getting a facial.
If you want your hair fully styled, you need to add on either a blow-out, flat iron, or curl. I was not aware; however, my hair was dried enough that it looked acceptable enough at the end to go out.
If you’re looking for a luxury head spa in Nanaimo or a unique wellness treatment that goes beyond the traditional spa visit, the Japanese Head Spa at Beyond Beauty Bar is well worth booking. It offers a luxurious escape that blends relaxation with visible results. Over a week out from my treatment, my hair still looks shiny and feels soft. It’s an indulgent experience that leaves you relaxed, restored, and I’m already planning my return.
