Where to Stay, Eat, and Drink in Montreal: Hotels, Bars & Hidden Gems

Over the last few years anytime I wanted a break or escape I tend to travel internationally, especially to Europe. Getting to Europe from Nanaimo can be a chore. It tends to be at least 3 flights and take a day to get there and back making an escape feel like a journey. Over this last year I decided to start seeing more of Canada. Montreal seemed like the perfect place to start. It’s a city that feels Canadian yet refreshingly European. Parts of the city still have cobblestone streets and historic architecture. Café culture makes you forget that you’re still in North America. Montreal’s charm lies in that blend: old-world vibes with a modern, creative edge. One visit was all it took to understand why this city deserves more attention.
Where to Stay
Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth
Staying at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth puts you right in the heart of Montreal, making it an ideal base for exploring the city. Located downtown above Central Station, the hotel offers unbeatable access to public transit, shopping, dining, and major attractions like Old Montreal and Mount Royal. Whether you’re heading out to wander historic streets, catch a festival, or explore the city in any season, everything feels close and convenient—perfect for making the most of your time in Montreal without the hassle of long commutes.
The Fairmont also has a Gold floor with a beautiful lounge. After years of travel I love a hotel with a club lounge. While I enjoy eating out I love the convenience of a club floor as a space to relax during the day. Instead of being cooped up in your room or finding a restaurant you can enjoy a drink and snack in the lounge while resting.
The Ritz-Carlton Montreal
The Ritz-Carlton Montreal boasts one of the city’s most coveted locations, right along Sherbrooke Street in the heart of the Golden Square Mile. Surrounded by luxury shopping, museums (like the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts), and some of Montreal’s best restaurants, it places you steps from both downtown energy and refined cultural landmarks. While further from old Montreal than the Fairmont it is still a pleasant and easy walk. Closer to Mount Royal, museums and great walking routes staying here means enjoying the city’s elegant and vibrant atmosphere from a quieter are.
Where to drink
Bar George
Bar George is located in downtown Montreal inside the historic Le Mount Stephen Hotel, just off Sherbrooke Street in the Golden Square Mile. It’s famous for its stylish setting, housed in a beautifully restored 19th-century mansion, and for its reputation as one of the city’s go-to spots for elevated cocktails. Known for expertly crafted drinks, a refined yet lively atmosphere, and a mix of classic and modern charm, Bar George is an ideal place to stop for a sophisticated drink—whether you’re starting your evening or winding down in true Montreal style.
Marcus Lounge and Bar
Tucked inside the Four Seasons Montreal, Marcus Lounge & Bar feels like a hidden gem for anyone seeking a drink with style and soul. The space balances modern elegance with a warm, inviting energy. The comfortable plush velvet seating is a lovely spot to end a night. The soft reflective lighting and glass accents create a glowy atmosphere that’s feels like the most upscale disco you have been in. Marcus Lounge delivers a polished, intimate experience that lingers long after the last sip.
The Palm Court
The Palm Court at the Ritz-Carlton Montreal is an elegant haven for a cocktail lover. The mix of a refined ambiance, tall ceilings, plush seating, and statement bar makes the space feel like a bar you would expect to find in a high end European hotel. If you are staying at the hotel why not grab a drink to take up and enjoy in your room.
Bar Nacarat
Located inside the Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth, Bar Nacarat is known for expertly crafted drinks, seasonal ingredients, and a stylish atmosphere that feels lively without being overwhelming. Bar Nacarat offers a polished yet approachable setting that makes it easy to settle in and enjoy. During the warmer months the patio offers gorgeous views of central Montreal with the glowing lights of sunset.
Terassse Nelligan
Perched above Old Montréal, Terrasse Nelligan is one of the city’s most iconic rooftop escapes. The patio pairs sweeping views of the Old Port, the St. Lawrence River, and Notre-Dame Basilica. Whether you visit for sunset cocktails, a leisurely brunch, or a warm evening under the string lights, the terrace captures the effortless glamour of Montréal in summer.
Where to Eat
Holts Café
Located inside Holt Renfrew on Sherbrooke Street, the café is an ideal spot for a leisurely lunch, a break from shopping or a casual yet upscale dining experience. If you are looking for a beautiful backdrop for photos the rich colours of the café are a gorgeous spot to snap some photos for instagram.
Le Pois Penche
Nestled in the heart of Montréal’s elegant Golden Square Mile, Le Pois Penché captures the timeless charm of a Parisian brasserie with a distinctly Montréal spirit. As an oyster lover I was taken by their gleaming oyster bar. The restaurant is famous for its elegant, modern take on classic French cuisine. We had to try the steak which was perfectly cooked, juicy, and full of flavor. You have many options for rich, inventive sauces and seasonal sides that elevate each bite. I loved the lush red velvet decor which provided a cozy yet sophisticated atmosphere.
Roselys
Dinner at Rosélys in the Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth feels like a polished yet approachable celebration of Montreal dining. The menu balances French-inspired elegance with modern, seasonal flavors, delivering beautifully plated dishes that are comforting without feeling heavy. The highlight of the evening was the Baba flambé. A tableside moment where a Baba is soaked in rum and lit on fire. Fruit and cream balances out the boozy dressed.
Bar Dominion
Bar Dominion in Montreal is a must-visit for anyone who loves great food, craft cocktails, and a lively atmosphere. Their menu is a perfect balance of classic comfort and elevated flavors. If you are craving a burger this is the spot to go. The cheeseburger was indulgent and flavourful. The fried chicken topped with caviar was crispy and juicy with the perfect punch of salt from the caviar. The fresh and crisp parmesan laden Caesar salad with thick cut bacon and pickled shallots is one of the best Caesar salad I have had. Drinks here are just as impressive. My dirty martini hit the spot. Expertly mixed and perfectly chilled it was a great way to start the meal. I love how the cocktail menu is thoughtfully divided by type. If you love martinis, Negronis, or whiskey cocktails, you can try the classics or explore the bar’s creative takes. There’s even a full section dedicated to variations of the French 75, perfect for anyone who enjoys a sparkling twist on a classic.
To top it all off, indulge in the churros to end your meal on a sweet, satisfying note. What really sets Bar Dominion apart is the ambiance: live music fills the space, giving every visit a vibrant, energetic feel that turns a simple night out into a full Montreal experience.
Mignon Steak Frites Vieux-Montréal
The name says it all. If you go to Mignon you need to try the steak frites. We got the filet Mignon which is served with crispy thin cut frites and sauce mignon. The steak was perfectly cooked medium rare and paired well with the rich and buttery sauce. We ordered the house salad for some much needed vegetables. The rich and cheesy Mignon Mac and Cheese was indulgent. It would be the perfect dish for a cool night. The restaurant also has the option of soup or salad, steak and unlimited fries for $49 dollars but the serving we got was more than enough.
Where to do afternoon Tea
Roselys
Sitting down for afternoon tea at Rosélys in the Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth is a charming way to slow down and savor a weekend in Montreal. Each service features a curated selection of flavorful loose‑leaf teas from around the world paired with savory and sweet bites designed to bring out the best in every sip. The bright, welcoming dining room and relaxed yet refined atmosphere make it an ideal pause during a busy day of exploring downtown. And if you want to make it extra special, there’s even a “Royal” upgrade with a glass of champagne alongside the classic treats. You know we took the upgrade.
Where to get coffee
Le Petit Dep
If you’re exploring Old Montreal, a stop at Le Petit Dep (and its nearby sister location on St‑Paul) is one of the coziest and most charming places to grab a coffee. Right near historic cobblestone streets and iconic landmarks like Notre‑Dame Basilica, this café celebrates local culture by showcasing Quebec artisanal products. The store is a great spot to pick up some culinary treats for friends who love food. The inviting décor and mix of pastries, fresh croissants, and take‑home treats make it a perfect break during your Old Montreal wander.

A meal at Venice MTL – Vieux-Montréal is a delicious way to slow down and soak in the charm of Old Montreal. Located on Rue Saint-Paul Ouest, the restaurant offers a bright and open sun-filled setting that pairs perfectly with its Californian inspired menu. It’s an ideal stop during a morning of wandering for a coffee or smoothie. Their menu offers fresh bowls, salads, tacos and pizzas.
